In the America I came from, people were kind to one another.
No matter how they felt about you on a daily basis, if you had a problem – a death in the family, a catastrophe, or even just needing a cup of sugar, your neighbors would be there.
In the America I came from, the President was a respected figure, even if he was politically opposite from your views. Even the worst Presidents carried a presidential air, and none were slouches by a long shot.
In the America I came from, even though there were factions – women fighting for their rights, whites vs. blacks, blacks vs. society – among those factions people pulled together for the good of their cause. Whatever the cause – civil rights, human rights, better housing, better wages – people knew their voices would be heard if they raised them as one.
It wasn’t a joke the day I was transported – house, yard, and all – to a foreign country. Like Dorothy being swept away from Kansas in a tornado, I woke up the next morning in a place where only certain people have rights and the law makes up the rules as they go. You never know what you are doing wrong, simple things like walking out in your back yard can be illegal. The police have their own set of rules, but you do not know what those rules are until they slap the handcuffs on you.
In the America I came from, the majority of the people were free and criminals went to jail.
In today’s America, the United States leads the world in incarcerating its citizens.
You laugh, and say, “What America did you come from? We have never been free!”
How can you miss what you have never had? How can you know what you are missing if you have never experienced the true taste of freedom?
Chaos creates change. Our country is in chaos these days, more so than it has been for decades!!!
In the America I came from, people stood up to be heard, and were listened to. Yelling and screaming and throwing bottle rockets was not the way to go, although some people tried it.
We have come to today’s world by complacency. We The People have let other people rule us. We have not gone to public meetings because they are a “waste of time.” Not into politics? Are you sorry now you kept your mouth shut?
“Should have’s” are too late. Must Do’s are in order.
First things first. I like this sign.

What do you think?
The Constitution is still the best governing document written. Countries all over the world use our constitution as a basis for their constitutions. The citizens of the free world value our freedom, and will fight to the death to maintain that right.
In the America I came from, people were allowed to express their opinions without hateful remarks and recriminations. Freedom of speech is a valuable freedom, one millions of people across the globe do not have.
Why would we give this up? Why are we giving up our freedoms? Why are we letting government take our freedoms away? Are you happy with this new country we’ve created? I hesitate to give the new country an old name “AMERICA.”
We don’t have to go back to the America I came from. Home is never the same when you leave it. BUT, we can build an America based on the old ways – ways of freedom, kindness and justice.
And if you disagree that the old America was based on these things, then now is the time to build the America that is.
The only way it will happen is if we raise our individual voices in protest, all singing the same song:

End the mass incarceration, end the police brutality, end the federal troops guarding against citizens.
We can do this, but only if UNITED WE STAND. The first words of the preamble of the Constitution. WE THE PEOPLE.
We the people need to take control of what is happening around us, and not with riots and looting, but by taking control by raising our voices as one.
If we do not stand up for ourselves, someone else will, and believe me, we won’t like what we get.
It is the American way. STAND UP and BE COUNTED. Start today!!!
